The Lemurs

Lemurs are an endemic species of monkey found only in Madagascar. The five families of this unique monkey are only observable all around the "Great Island". You can find them in national parks, natural reserves, or in their simplest habitat, the tropical rainforest. A symbol of Malagasy fauna, they will enhance your hiking trips, outings in the south, or birdwatching tours.

Currently, there are 102 species of lemurs. Each of them can be seen in Madagascar, whether in the Tsimbazaza Zoo, in one of the many national parks, or in the wild. The places where you can observe them are countless, and new species are still being discovered, like the dwarf lemur of Ankarana.

The Humpback Whales

Every year, from June to September, humpback whales migrate off the northeast coast of Madagascar to mate and give birth. You can join small groups to observe these impressive marine mammals that arrive in hundreds.

After traveling thousands of kilometers, they arrive in the warm tropical waters of Madagascar for the breeding season. You will be able to witness the incredible mating displays performed by the males for their females: jumps, flipper slaps, and breaches.

The Birds

On specialized excursions or during walks in nature, you will discover the island's rich and unique avifauna. Madagascar enjoys remarkable faunistic and floristic biodiversity. You will be able to observe these many birds that live in the island's forests.

As a true ornithological park, Madagascar brings together an incredible variety of birds. A paradise for nature lovers and especially for ornithologists, both young and old will enjoy watching Madagascar's birds in their natural habitat.

The Tsingy

Formed by erosion, Madagascar's tsingy are fossilized shell formations. You will admire them in a spectacular setting that takes you back to a forgotten era: the Jurassic period.

Visible in several regions of Madagascar, tsingy refers to vast stretches of limestone and brittle rocks composed of fossilized shells. Millions of years ago, Madagascar was still connected to the rest of Africa...

The Baobabs

A true emblem of Malagasy flora, the baobab is a majestic and sacred tree with eight species. Seven of these species grow only in Madagascar. The Alley of Baobabs contains the highest number of specimens in the world, allowing you to appreciate their impressive size and admire some trunks naturally intertwining (the "lover" baobab).

The baobab, also known as "reniala" ("mother of the forest") in Malagasy, is a centuries-old tree that is 100% Malagasy.

The baobab itself serves as a significant water reserve, allowing it to withstand extreme climatic conditions.

The Ravinala

Endemic to the island, this is the only species in its genus. It is now a symbol of the country and can be found on coins, as well as the logo of One Mada. If you're adventurous, you can extract and drink the sap of the Ravenala with a machete. Abundant and tasty, it will delight you during your forest hikes.

The Orchids

Madagascar is the land of orchids. On this island off the coast of Africa, 1,200 species of orchids have been recorded, making Madagascar the country with the greatest diversity of orchids in the world. Thus, on the "Great Island," the orchid reigns supreme.

This abundance is due to the island's geological formation, which separated from Africa and India 160 million years ago. Long ignored and thus protected, Madagascar remains today a true sanctuary for endemic orchid species. Present for millennia, these unique species have developed true survival strategies, creating symbiotic relationships with certain animals like butterflies, ants, birds, and other plant species.
