Madagascar, an island of many facets, offers an impressive geographical richness with its vibrant cities and regions boasting diverse landscapes. Each region of the island is unique, both in its culture and its natural characteristics. From idyllic beaches to majestic mountains, Madagascar invites discovery and adventure at every corner.
The main cities, such as Antananarivo, Toamasina, and Fianarantsoa, are centers of cultural and economic activity. Each of these cities bears the imprint of Malagasy history and presents a fascinating blend of traditional and modern influences. These cities are gateways to the island's natural wonders, while offering unique urban experiences to visitors.
The capital of Madagascar, it is the main gateway to the island. Antananarivo or Tana is home to the main economic, cultural, and political activities.
In recent years, there has been a surge of modernization with the transformation of entire neighborhoods, the appearance of new infrastructures, especially roads, and the implementation of a "Green Plan" synonymous with beautification.
The city's fascinating architecture, with three levels, includes the traditional houses with verandas, which were originally imported but over time became fully "local". The old town remains immutable on the hills, and the towers of the Queen's Palace, under reconstruction, will once again watch over the City of a Thousand.
The countryside around Antananarivo is crisscrossed by an incredible network of dirt roads and tracks that enthusiasts of mountain biking and quad biking never tire of exploring.
For everyone and for every taste, there are numerous activities to do in the capital of Madagascar and its surroundings. Whether you're into historical culture, fauna and flora, or adventure, Madagascar's capital will meet your expectations.
Arriving in the spa town of ANTISIRABE almost immediately brings a sense of well-being. With its wide avenues, the leisurely pace of rickshaw pullers, and the carefree cyclists, everything here inspires this "moramora" lifestyle. But this slow pace is just a façade: Antsirabe is the second industrial hub of Madagascar and the engine of agricultural development in a particularly fertile region.
The history of Antsirabe is closely tied to its springs, the first of which was discovered in 1878 by Norwegian missionaries. From there, a long tradition of hospitality was born, highlighted by the opening of the Hôtel des Thermes in 1922, designed to accommodate spa guests, and the quality of the stay in Madagascar by King Mohammed V of Morocco during his exile in the 1950s. Today, the Vakinankaratra region is a major center for rural tourism.
An exceptional bay, a true inland sea, where the Sugar Loaf stands out, along with mythical mountains that are guardians of both biodiversity and traditions, and dramatic landscapes shaped by tectonic movements, two seas—the Indian Ocean and the Mozambique Channel. This concentration is explained by the fact that Madagascar is here at its narrowest point.
The particularities are also vivid, and one should not be surprised that during the Tsanga-Tsainy ceremonies, the red crescent and star flag of the Antakarana kingdom flies alongside the national flag.
Designed for defensive purposes, after a tumultuous history shaped by military strategists, Diego-Suarez seems strangely turned inward. It is one of the most pleasant cities to live in, with its "retro" charm and a mosaic of peoples where white Djellabas and multicolored Lambaoanys cross paths.
Its best feature is its bay, which is part of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, alongside prestigious names such as Robben Island, Rio de Janeiro, Halong Bay, and San Francisco.
The former province of Fianarantsoa found a fitting slogan for its tourism, being "multicolored". Here and nowhere else are the colors of the Highlands, the East Coast, and the Grand South brought together.
Let’s take the train, the Fianarantsoa-East Coast line: 56 tunnels dug by hand, 4 viaducts over less than 170km, a route sometimes along cliff edges and often through tropical forests, a visible transformation of populations and habitats starting with the Betsileo people, then straight through vast tea fields of Sahambavy, Tanala, Antemoro, and finally the terminus: Manakara.
The capital of Betsileo is known for its piety, and a visit to this gem begins at a cathedral built in 1871 and completed in 1893, leading to the first religious building in the south of Madagascar, the Antranobiriky Temple dating back to 1859.
Antemoro paper and Arindrano textiles are specialties of Ambalavao, also the starting point for many excursions, notably towards the Tsaranoro Valley and the Andringitra mountains.
The southeast zone of Madagascar, Fort-Dauphin and its surroundings, is among the most beautiful and diverse regions of the island. This province is inhabited by a mosaic of ethnic groups, adding to its charm. Its exceptional coastal layout with long sandy beaches, fish-filled coves, and favorable conditions for water sports, is complemented by an inland landscape ranging from lush eastern Malagasy vegetation to the semi-arid bush of the Antandroy region in the southwest.
With its beautiful coastline, its inland areas, and natural reserves, Fort Dauphin's tourism is a prime example of Madagascar's duality between beach tourism and discovery.
It’s delightful to stroll through the capital of Boina, encountering Muslim architecture, Indian shops with ornate doors, or simply seeking shelter under arcades when the famously generous sun gets a little too intense. A visit to the Old Baobab, an iconic figure of the city, is a must.
It’s always a good time to find yourself at the waterfront in the evening, enjoying a breeze while chatting about anything and everything.
The Red Circus is one of Majunga’s iconic features, with its unusual multicolored sands and clays.
Eco-tourism has a major attraction here with the Ankarafantsika National Park, 115km inland. 25km north, Antsanitia, a prime coastal spot, offers endless beaches and a primary forest with remarkably clear groundwater.
Numerous caves are known to underground "safari" enthusiasts within a 100km radius, with the most beautiful being the Anjohibe caves, featuring a labyrinth of galleries and fascinating formations, with vaults reaching 15 meters high.
The city of Morondava, the City of Sea Lords, is located in a legendary and mythical region, Menabe. It is home to the Vezo fishermen, who are part of the Sakalava tribe, one of Madagascar’s most famous.
The coastline, stretching over several kilometers, comes alive at the first light of morning. Here, women wearing traditional masks carry babies on their backs and baskets full of fish on their heads, heading to the market to sell their catch. The sea is a vital source of life for the fishermen who wake up before dawn, and the image of their square sails on the outrigger canoes has become a classic of Morondava.
Meanwhile, the Baobab forest, though very popular with tourists, remains one of the most mystical sites in Madagascar. At sunset, the light plays an extraordinary palette on the majestic baobabs, which seem to stand alone, as if in a dream...
Without a doubt, it is one of the most famous and visited islands of Madagascar. Its climate is ideal for tourism all year round. It is one of the top destinations for diving and water sports enthusiasts. Its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear lagoon are a true paradise for vacationers.
Throughout the island, you can find tropical forests and breathtaking landscapes. Nosy Be is also a place to discover Madagascar’s fauna and flora in a fascinating way.
Among other points of interest, we can mention the Lokobe Nature Park, the Ankarafantsika Special Reserve, and Mount Passot, an impressive site offering spectacular views of the sea.
